WOPHA Receives Key Support from Knight Foundation to Launch the Inaugural Congress

(Miami – February 10, 2020) Miami based organization, Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA) receives key support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge, for the Women Photographers International Congress (WOPHA Congress). The two-day WOPHA Congress generates a critical space for photography by bringing together worldwide organizations of women photographers, art historians, and curators who aim to build upon and better represent the dynamic history of women photographers from the 19th Century through today. It will create a highly visible, interactive event presenting daily panels and presentations from Thursday, November 19, 2020, to Friday, November 20, 2020, at Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

The Knight Arts Challenge is a community-wide search to find and fund the best ideas for engaging and enriching South Florida through the arts. The Congress presented in partnership with PAMM aligns with this mission as it presents crucial national and international discussions about women and feminisms in the history of photography. It fills a gap in knowledge, generates excitement about this art form and draws internationally recognized scholars and artists to present in the city.

We are excited to help bring the Women Photographers International Congress to Miami later this year.”

Participants in the Congress include Abigail Solomon-Godeau, Professor Emerita, Department of Art History, University of California; Claire Raymond, art historian, lecturer at the University of Virginia; and Roxana Marcoci, Senior Curator of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
